In 1921, Rabbi Ashlag immigrated to the Land of Israel and settled in Jerusalem. His central vision was promoting systematic study of the Book of Zohar as a means for humanity's correction. He devoted himself to spreading Kabbalah, established a yeshiva called Iturei Rabbanim and founded a Hasidic court that attracted many followers.
Rabbi Ashlag's tremendous influence on Judaism and Kabbalah is immense, becoming the heritage of millions worldwide. He was a revolutionary who believed that the wisdom of Kabbalah must be revealed to the entire world in preparation for complete redemption. Rabbi Ashlag passed away in 1953, leaving behind an eternal legacy that illuminates souls and provides inspiration.
Rabbi Yehuda Zvi Hirsch Brandwein (1903-1969), considered the greatest of Rabbi Ashlag's students and successors, and served as his brother-in-law. He was born in Safed to a respected Hasidic family, inheriting a deep spiritual legacy, being the sixth generation in the Land of Israel from great Admors.
During World War I, Rabbi Brandwein traveled to Hungary, where he studied Torah from Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar. Upon his return to Jerusalem, he studied at the Chaim Olam and Shaar HaShamayim yeshivot, and grew close to Rabbi Ashlag, under whom he became the most prominent and devoted student of the Baal HaSulam. Recognizing his exceptional potential, Rabbi Ashlag personally taught Rabbi Brandwein and prepared him to continue his monumental work. The depth of their relationship was further strengthened when Rebbetzin Rivka, Rabbi Ashlag's wife, arranged for Rabbi Brandwein to marry her younger sister, Leah.
Rabbi Brandwein received his rabbinical ordination from great public figures such as Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld and Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook. After Rabbi Ashlag's passing, Rabbi Brandwein inherited the vast collection of his master's manuscripts. He devoted himself to editing and publishing these precious texts, ensuring that Rabbi Ashlag's profound teachings would reach a broad audience. Rabbi Brandwein added to and developed the teachings in various ways; among his significant works is his monumental commentary Maalot HaSulam on Tikkunei HaZohar, which is an explanation in the format of The Sulam Commentary. He was also appointed as rabbi of the religious department of the Histadrut, where he taught Kabbalah to a select group of students, seeing his efforts as a direct continuation of his great master's mission.
The entire archive holds clear testimony to Rabbi Brandwein's tireless work and his direct continuation of publishing and developing Rabbi Ashlag's monumental compositions. His contributions were vital in preserving, developing and disseminating the complex wisdom of Kabbalah, ensuring its continued relevance for future generations.
